Importing Argos satellite tracking data

From your study, select Upload data > Import data > Argos Doppler data. Movebank offers two separate upload channels for Argos data: data in raw DIAG format and processed Argos data in tabular format. If you have already filtered and cleaned your data and do not want to keep additional satellite information, select Upload > Import data > Other location data and follow the instructions for uploading custom data. Please be sure that your day and time information were obtained from Argos in UTC (see below).

When you import the two sets of locations provided by Argos, Movebank initially uses the Solution 1 locations from Argos as the Movebank latitude and longitude attributes. If you run an Argos filter on the dataset, Movebank will identify Argos "mirror" (Solution 2) locations that are very likely to be the better of the two Argos location estimates, and in these cases will use the Solution 2 coordinates as the Movebank latitude and longitude attributes. These changes will not be reverted if you later clear your Argos filter settings. Both sets of coordinates always remain stored in your dataset.

Importing raw DIAG data

The DIAG upload channel accepts only tracking data in DIAG format. The upload process does not require much user interaction, except for the supply of PTT (tracking tags) information.

Importing processed Argos data

If you have transformed your raw Argos data to tabular data sheets, use this upload channel. It is specifically configured to handle the extensive list of diagnostic parameters coming with your location data, and will try to map them to Movebank attributes. For details about how to map data attributes, see Importing custom tabular data. Your file should contain

In addition, you can import the Argos error radius, GDOPsatellite ID, and error ellipse parameters. For a detailed description of Argos data formats and parameters see the Argos user manual.

Before analysing Argos satellite tracking data you will have to clean and filter them. You can do that using specific Movebank tools.

Argos data timestamps

The Argos user manual states that day and time are provided in UTC. We are aware of one exception to this: If you download your data from, you will be asked to select a time zone (the default is GMT). If you select a time zone other than GMT or UTC, any data you download will have the day and time in the chosen time zone, including daylight savings time when applicable. Once the data have been downloaded in this format, the file contains no information to indicate that the day and time are not in UTC. Therefore, there is no way for Movebank to automatically detect this and correct for the time difference. If you have obtained Argos data in this way using a local time zone, you may need to convert the timestamps to UTC prior to importing them to Movebank.
